Jewish burial customs
Our EcoRest caskets, if unfinished, meet the commonly accepted requirements for Jewish burials while still being sustainably made.
Jewish burial customs emphasize simplicity, humility, and adherence to religious laws. The requirements for Jewish caskets include:
1. **All-Natural Materials**: Caskets must be made entirely of wood or other natural materials that decompose naturally. Metal, plastic, and other non-biodegradable materials are not allowed.
2. **Simple Design**: The casket should be plain and unadorned, reflecting the principle of equality in death. Extravagant designs or decorations are discouraged.
3. **No Metal Parts**: This includes nails, screws, and hinges. Wooden pegs and dowels are used instead.
4. **Perforations**: Some traditions require small holes in the casket to ensure it contacts the earth, aiding in natural decomposition.
5. **Basic Interior**: The interior of the casket should also be simple, usually lined with a plain cloth.
These requirements are rooted in the Jewish values of modesty, equality, and respect for the deceased, as well as environmental considerations.
